Yes...I went to go see Fall Out Boy at the Knitting Factory last Friday. Why? I thought it would be fun. Was it? Sure.
Some thoughts:
- I only WISH I could go to more shows with a crowd 1/5 as excited to be there as these kids were to see FOB.
- I also wish I saw more bands that acted 1/5 as excited to be playing a show.
- Just for the record, I don't think the band is particularly good. They have a couple hits like Sugar and Dance, but even as far as mainstream 00's Emo-pop goes, this isn't that great.
- That said, hearing 200 kids screaming along to every word makes even the most banal songs seem legendary.
- I just realized this is my second Fall out Boy post in the last 3 months.
- Anyway...Peter the bass player is a total dreamboat. He's their meal ticket. I actually know a guy who looks like him. (compare here and here) If I'm ever short on cash, I may throw a bass around his neck and start a myspace page. It doesn't seem like it takes much to get signed these days.
- Mikey Way (that shy looking dude you've seen Sulking around Orchard Bar on Friday nights wearing your mother's knit cap and eyeglasses) jumped in to play bass on "Dance Dance." He's this generation's Krist Novoselic, FYI.
- Some other guy came on to sing part of a song who the girls went nuts for...no idea who he was. Looked a bit like a young version of what Perry Ferrell looks like now.
- There was lots of between-song banter, mostly by cutiepie Peter. There was some bit about how he likes how the kids who used to throw footballs at his head and call him a faggot in highschool now stand in the front row of his shows and sing along to every word. Good stuff.
- Regarding the band itself, I got a kick out of how the lead singer is such an afterthought. It is all about the bass and guitar players. They were the ones doing kicksprings off the walls, throwing their guitars around and standing on the front of the stage to let the boys and girls pet their legs. The chubby singer just plops down in the middle of it all with his hat pulled over his eyes like he's trying to stay out of it.
UPDATE: Speak of the devil...Modernage found sidekick photos of our friend Peter's pee-pee. Best part of the shots is the Morrissey poster...in his bathroom. Too good.
OK. That's enough. A few more pics after the jump.
I hope this performance was better than that joke I watched on SNL. It was one of the worst television appearances by a band that I have seen in a long, long time.

This new band, Concavity of the HardDance Stigmata, has -- by far -- the dreamiest rhythm/base one-two punch.

I refuse to believe that the last comment wasn't a joke. Concavity of the HardDance Stigmata? This needs to stop.

Sorry Jeff, your friend is waaaaay dreamier than Peter the bassist

Joey, seriously. They fuckin rock. They're like electric synth / post punk fist-pumping goth trance. Faux leather, eyeliner, biceps to die for. The works! I hear they're playing a secret set at Coachella.

Yea Fall Out Boy has definitely gone down a few places on the live performance chart ever since their new album. If you've ever seen them in their Take This To Your Grave days, you'd definitely see a difference from then and now. But hey, I still like them even though they suck live. On Jay Leno, they actually did decent... better than SNL anyway haha. That was a total joke of a performance.
