Okay...
A couple nights ago I went up to the Spin offices to check out a stripped down performance by She Wants Revenge. I've got mixed reactions to them, but they managed to play in a short set with all of the songs I dig off the album and none of the ones that kinda lag. They were a bit uncomfortable sitting in an office, rather than standing in a smokey club, (they made a point to mention it about 3 times) but they sounded good. As for the Interpol comparisons, I don't think they're quite right. They've got the dark gothish sound and the singer's voice is not unlike Paul Banks, but it's much closer to Sisters of Mercy or Bauhaus (or even the Editors) than Interpol itself. Feel free to disagree. Check out Spin's coverage of the set here.
After this, I headed downtown to rothko to squeeze into the superpacked Rothko to see the 5 O'clock Heroes and The Subways. Both bands were much much better than I expected. I can't believe I had never seen the Heroes play, since they seem to always be around. But they rocked. I wanna listen to more of their stuff and go see them again. Soon. The Subways I figured to be another run of the mill Brit pop blah blah. They squeeze right in with Nine Black Alps, Arctic Monkeys, The Cribs and others. But they left it all on the stage, were running around, climbing stacks, shaking their head and playing the hits. I had medium expectations for both acts and left super impressed.
Last night was Voxtrot. I caught a bit of the Deadly Snakes before, who I didn't really love, but they had a few good songs. The night belonged to the boys from Austin, however. They played almost every song I knew of theirs as well as a few newbies and a stellar cover of the Talking Heads' Heaven. The crowd loved it. Wouldn't let them leave the stage at the end. Everyone seemed to be having a blast. SO looking forward to the new EP and the next tour. (hopefully next spring)
Okay, gotta run down to Merc for Snowden. See pics from SWR and The Subways after the jump (forgot my camera last night for Voxtrot...Grrrrr)
voxtrot is awful. you fucking bloggers need to get off that train quick.
