A week ago I was pretty burnt out by all the shock and awe over the supposed decline of the Lower East Side. This was mostly from the Starbucks uproar, but further propagated by blog posts such as this one "officially" declaring the LES dead. Whatever. I was thrilled to read Krucoff this morning post my exact sentiments far more eloquently than I ever could have. Thank you.
Just 3 points to make:
1. The Lower East Side was not the first 'cool' spot in New York. Virtually every block below 14th street has gone through the same "impoverished > bohemian > wealthy" progression over the last 70 years. This is nothing new.
2. You sound silly when you threaten to move, as if we are worried the lack of your presence will seriously hurt the hood's cred. 99% of y'all will be back in the suburbs within 10 years anyway. You're not doing anybody any favors, trust me.
3. The gentrification doesn't start when the Starbucks moves in. It starts when the rents go up. Ask your homey chilling outside a bodega on Pitt St. or Ave. D if he prefers 88 Orchard over Starbucks...
