Coachella 2005: Day 1

What a weekend. Saturday morning we took a very roundabout way to get to the grounds, missing Buck 65 and Gratitude, but we were there in time to catch a chunk of the Ravonettes set on the main stage. They were fine, but I didn't stick around for more than a few songs. I headed up to one of the tents to catch M83.

They were surprisingly great. Everybody I had ever spoken to about them said they were a boring live act, but I was very impressed. I walked next door to catch a second of Ambulance Ltd before going back down to the main stage for Snow Patrol, who I like a lot.

Razorlight was next, and they turned out to be the first and only really awful set I saw that weekend. I hated them. The songs were brutal and their stage presence was embarrassing. Even if I don't personally like a band, I can usually tell if or why so many people like them, but Razorlight was totally lost on me.

Rilo Kiley came on after them, and played a cute little set. Some weren't as impressed as others, thinking their setlist was a bit lame, but I thought they sounded good. Following them, we headed back over to the Main Stage to see Wilco.

I realized part way through the RK set that I didn't need to see Wilco as much as I had previously thought. I like them and all, but my determination to see their full set came mostly out of the fact that I had missed so many opportunities to see them in the past. So I saw them this time. Not the whole set, but a good chunk sitting on the grass. They were fine. Was very happy to hear them sing Jesus Etc. and a couple other nice songs, but I don't regret not seeing the entire thing.

Weezer was on after, so we got up and moved a bit closer to watch. This was the highlight of the day. They played some new songs, their singles, and a bunch of stuff from blue album. Very solid. Made me rethink my decision not to go see them at Roseland coming up.

Following them we headed up to see The Secret Machines finish up before Bloc Party.

I don't know what it was, but they were very very off that night. Maybe I was standing in a bad place in the tent with a funny echo, or maybe they were just really fucked up, but every song sounded really sloppy. Too bad.

We went back outside to see a bit of Coldplay before walking over to Spoon. Britt was hoarse as shit, but the band sounded great. Was nice to hear stuff off the new album.

So all in all, it was a solid day. The bands were all good, but with the exception of Weezer, nothing that really wowed me. I guess it serves me right for playing it safe and only seeing bands I already knew and liked. My only real regret was skipping Bauhaus for a lousy BP set, but looking back over the day's bands, that's about it. It was mostly lots of bands I had already seen playing inferior sets to the previous ones. That's not to say it wasn't a great time, but it was, at least musically, way inferior to what was to come on day 2...

hmmm....i thought the bloc party set was awesome (maybe that was because i have been listening to them since last june and had yet to see them)...anyways, i will have my pics and review up later...wasn't too impressed with weezer...it was good to see them on stage again, and play some of their stuff...but i don't like the new stuff...anyways, to each his own...and oh yeah...m83...awesome

With the exception of getting trapped in a mass of slam-dancing goths during NIN, Bloc Party's performance was BY FAR the most memorable Coachella performance for me. I was right up near the front so maybe that made a difference, but they were anything but "off" to me.

Nice recap though.

Script's work based on "Word-combinations Ocurrence",script searches at the blog's submittion form only "Basic words" from a file of parities (correlations) (SETS.ini file),not just whole word (field's name or other values) ,so for example if its needed to find and process for succesfull submittion "current_blog_action" value in blog's form,you shuold add "action" in sets.ini. And "current_blog_action", "gb_action" and "action" form's values are absollutely Identical for script! But if you adding to sets.ini only "current_blog_action" script will submitt only to url with "current_blog_action" form's value, and cant submitt to form with "gb_action".So you need add to sets.ini only "action" for successful submittion to all this types of forms.
