I'd be lying if I said I didn't get a little bit sentimental every time I read something about the OC these days. This article (thanks to Sound Bites for the link) really nailed it for me. I haven't watched the the show since right after Johnny died last season. I tuned in briefly to see Marissa die, and that's been it. I hear rumors or Taylor Townsend becoming a star and a community destroying earthquake, but while it still records every week on my DVR, I haven't been able to bring myself to watch it. Even tho some even claim that the show is ending on a better note than it's ever reached previously, I just can't.
I did recently go back and watch the first 7 episode mini-season from Season 1 with someone who had never seen the show before. I don't think she was very impressed, and to be honest, it didn't age nearly as well as I had hoped. But it did at least act as a reminder of how great I thought it was back then, and those moments were nice to relive. It brought back memories of a pretty good time in my life. Not like the show was some sort of pathetic substitute to my life, thank you, but rather as a compliment to what I was doing then. I remember texting with a friend (joking about how absurd this whole texting thing was) while standing over a copier at a temp job late summer 2003 making plans to watch the premiere episode over at her place. Memories of downloading Bit Torrents of the episodes Monday nights because they aired in Canada 2 days earlier and people would record and post them as soon as they were done airing in Halifax. Stuff like that. It really was a perfect storm of entertainment back then that I was completely obsessed with. Everything worked so well and hit right in stride with my post college musical development.
That was really the one thing that stood out so wonderfully about the show still. The music was really perfect. And the little side comments about Seth liking Death Cab still stand up long past listening to Death Cab has. It's already given this show a dated context which it will fortunately never be able to escape. It will always be this quintessential 00's show, when the popular bands of the future were still breaking out, and people could still get excited about a Bright Eyes reference.
At the end of the article linked to above, Schwartz lists his favorite musical moments from the show's history. While I can't argue with many of his picks, I cannot believe he left out perhaps the greatest moment in the shows history. The Coffee Stand scene. As far as I'm concerned, Patrick Park never existed if it wasn't for these 90 seconds.
Here's the Song:

RIP OC
I'll never forget the great times we had in Season One.
Always Stay Sweet.

Hmmm...I never watched the show. Nonetheless, Patrick Park can enhance any watching experience, I imagine.
