I've mentioned this before, but 2006 was not a great year for music in my world. Especially towards the end. I don't discredit the bands nearly as much as I just recognized my losing interest in the same bands that a year earlier I'd have been really excited about. Take Malajube, for example, who are completely awesome by all accounts, but someone I just never bothered to get into. Blame it on bloggers fatigue, Stereogum backlash, whathaveyou (I couldn't get past "This band is call Malajube. Fuck you.")
I was just sick of not keeping up with all the new bands and more or less gave up after a certain point. When you finally give into the Midlakes and the Cold War Kids' and are as disappointed as anticipated, it's hard to get excited about another letdown. But I'm over that. For now. This year has already started off better, for whatever reason and I'm even catching up a bit on the good stuff I missed last year. Malajube is, of course, one of these bands. And golly do I feel silly for never giving these guys a listen before. They are really quite great. Terrific live performers, excellent songs and really amusing, nonsensical ESL stage banter. I don't normally go see bands live without listening to them first, probably because 9 times out of 10 I don't like what I hear. But these fellas were a great exception. I look forward to paying closer attention in the future.
Here's an MP3, Via DR. (Only one of their songs sounded like TBS, BTDubz. And it did.)
Malajube - Montréal -40° (mp3)
Fred Fortin over Malajube any day. Seeing as we're all listening to French Canadian music now that it's socially acceptable
