I'm a festival guy. I like the looseness and the non structured nature of the weekend. I completely escaping for a weekend, away from civilization and computers, spending time with people I don't usually get to see for such a laid back block of time. If I spend 45 weekends per year in New York City, I'd like the 7 or so I don't be be as great an escape as possible, and while I dig South By Southwest for all different reasons (booked my flight today!), I really can't picture a more perfect summer day than waking up in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do but walk around and see bands. Even if it's 130 degrees. It's even better when I have a pool to retire to at the end of the day.
Coachella is always up first. Last few years, me and a bunch of non-blogging, non-music related buddies(Example, see left. Ladies, his name is Chris and he owns 250 pairs of bluejeans.) have stayed in a giant, beautiful house in Palm Springs, listened to terrible trance music and generally run amok around whatever gated community was foolish enough to rent us a place. But one way or another, we all get through OK, and looking back it is, without question, one of the most enjoyable and memorable weekends of the year. Has Jesse Camp ever woken you up on a couch at 6am to say that Carlos D's Taxi Van was waiting for him outside? That happened to me. I'll be telling that story for years. Have you ever sat in a hot tub drinking vodka tonics while listening to Jens Lekman as the sun came up over the desert mountains? Nothing better. Sure, the risk of serious injury or death is high, especially considering the place we're looking at this year has a giant 25 foot fake cliff waterfall going into the pool, but it's all kind of worth it in the end. It's just the best time ever, and discussing our 2007 plans this morning sent a warm and fuzzy tingle down my spine. Only 3 months to go.
So long story short, I read on the Coachella message board via idolator that this group called VNV Nation I'd never heard of was playing this year, and from the second I went to their myspace page to see what their deal is, I knew this was gonna be the theme of the weekend come April. Even tho I've got this odd gut feeling we'll be listening to a lot of old Minus the Bear and new Of Montreal that weekend, nothing says 4 nights in the desert like goth-tinged industrial trance. Nothing.
