If you ask anyone I know, they'd agree that I've got a pretty high tolerance for what most consider shitty popular music. I listen to the Get Up Kids and My Chemical Romance somewhat regularly. I've seen (and, for the most part, enjoyed) Fall Out Boy play live recently. Panic! on the Disco even makes me smile a little, and I've never hidden the fact that I'm a fan of The Killers.
So I get an email from the publicist for the band Say Anything. Lets forget about the band name for now. That's a debate for someone slightly older than me. I had heard of them. Am pretty sure they're aiming for the under 18, FUSE crowd. AKA my wheelhouse. I know they've sold out Bowery fairly quickly and I'm pretty sure they're on a major label. Prolly primed to be real big someday. I thought I owed it to myself to at least listen to the song they sent, titled "Wow, I Can Get Sexual Too."
This song literally made me sick to my stomach.
I've had music give me an instant headache (Hi Dillinger Escape Plan!) but I really can't remember the last time a song made me physically ill. And it gets even worse after the first verse. Yes, it goes downhill after the lyric "I'd be chatting on the Interweb." The chorus, my god, the chorus. If you don't get any further than that, there's also some mention of shul and a Rabbi. I think. Maybe I had just become completely delirious by that point.
Anyway, I dare you to listen. Maybe the rest of their stuff is descent, maybe they're alright guys, but this song is the absolute worst. Makes LFO's 'Summer Girls' sound like a lost Pavement b-side.
Say Anything - Wow, I Can Get Sexual Too (mp3)
If somebody has the ability to mash this up with the new Mets theme song, please let me know. Thanks.

Personally, I love the song because they are being so sarcastic. The man is a genius with a great voice. Try "Glory of Love" or "I Want to Know Your Plans" Or an older song "Color Blind" or "Spidersong". Seriously a great band. This stuff is way better than anything you can find on the internet and their album is one of best I've heard this year.

say anything has so many better songs. try them.
album '...is a real boy' is amazing. if you dont like it then you just dont like original and unique music and you should stick to panic! at the disco.

Umm... Okay, that's great and all, but what does The Postal Service have to do with any of this at all??

I love this song. i think it is wonderful. it is catchy and i can't help sing along.

laughing at most of you. who really cares about the song lyrics? its an awesome song, you're supposed to ENJOY it, not get outraged over some lyrics that might be slightly off colour.

You guys are stupid. Lyrics have a lot to do with song acceptance. If the lyrics suck, then the song sucks. No question.

again, this has what to do with the postal service?

i would just like to say, Max Bemis is a really intellectual guy. the lyrics he has been writing, even at the age of 16, are full of meaning, and he is able to tell it like it is.
this song is an example. hes making fun of people like Justin Timberlake, and the ridiculous lyrics they write.
take a listen to Admit it!. then you might not judge a band with only one song.
but remember, hes begins sarcastic.

Ha. Clearly you guys don't know what good music is. Being a music student i'll be the first to admit that 'Wow, I can get sexual too' is anything far from musically complicated. Infact, the whole verse uses meerly two chords. However, the song is brilliant. Very catchy vocal line and a somewhat addictive drum beat. Now listening to their other stuff I can safely argue that many of their other songs are musically quite good. 'Alive with the glory of love' for example.
I would agree with the other posters that lyrics somewhat play a part in the enjoyment of a song, but simply stating 'if the lyrics suck, the song sucks' is ridiculous. Get over it.
And Postal Service rock btw.

theyre awesome! this song is the only one thats pretty weird, but the rest are really good and you shouldnt be judgemental about the band if you've only listened to one song.

None of you obviously get the song, it's quite hilarious when you realize they're mocking the whole sex happy craze a lot of pop songs have now...you guys are really slow.

You seriously need to check yourself. You are WAY too uptight.
Hello, the Say Anything's most endearing trait is their sarcasm. Even if you don't know that,
If you just listen, you can tell right off that it's mocking all the sex-obsessed hits on VH1, MTV, mundo...
He even sings out the mockery, "I laughed myself to sleep"
Get it?
You're holier-than-thou, pretentious journalist style made me cringe, even the title sucks. Get off your high horse and really listen to the music, man.

OMG. that was completely horrible. someone shoot these assholes cause they suck
Posted by: Nny | January 28, 2008 at 06:41 AM
you obviously didn't understand the song, and i assume you haven't seen the video. this song was made to mock music these days. say anything is a brilliant band and they have been for quite a while. you should listen to their other songs; and then maybe you'll understand just how great of a band they are.

haha, i love how your bashing say anything when your admiting you listen to panic! at the disco and fall out boy.
im not really a fan of any of those bands but i do like the postal service i dont understand what they have to do with this.
the postal service is amazing and these other bands arent anything like them.
so what the hell, dude.
Posted by: harley | May 13, 2008 at 02:20 PM
the way they sarcastically make fun of our desperate and naive youth is ingenious.
and to all of you who call the music "bad", i've got news for you: there is no such thing as bad. it's all relative. like large and small: a leaf man be large to an ant but small to a human.
one man's garbage is another's masterpiece.
=]

your all fucking retarded and don't know band names nor how good or shitty the music you listen to really is...
