Two things today. First, I just noticed there's a Voxtrot in-studio at KEXP. Looks like it was recorded the weekend before SXSW up in Seattle. Not only is is a great recording for the most part, but it's the best (only?) recording of their stellar cover of The Talking Head's 'Heaven' that I've seen. Hopefully soon, some motivated blogger will convert this to an MP3. For now, have a listen here.
Went to see Editors last night. I think one of the reasons I liked them so much at Rothko was that I was I had lowered expectations. They are a very very good band live, don't get me wrong, but by the time I saw them a few months ago, I was over the album, wasn't listening to them much anymore, didn't know what to expect and was only half interested. When they came on and killed, I was really taken back. This time, I went in expecting it to be great. I haven't listened to their album any more since the last time I'd seen them, didn't have any new insight or anything. So last night it merely met my already high expectations. If you've never seen them, even if you didn't love the album, they're a band worth seeing live. If you've seen them already, don't expect the bar to be raised any higher than it already had been. At least not this time around.
Oh, also, can we give the Interpol rip-off observation a rest? It's such a knee-jerk and generally inaccurate reaction. With the exception of the guy's voice, which sets the tone and all that to a certain extent, these bands have FAR less in common than you'd think. Editors play giant, sweeping, songs. Interpol is known for the opposite; sharp, minimalist jabs. Interpol makes sure you hear every single note being played. Editors blend together more of a wall of sound. Especially live (aside from the admittedly Interpolesque light show, but everybody does that these days, right?.) Sure, they both were influenced by bands like Joy Division, but really, the similarities more or less end there. It'd be like saying The National and Wolf Parade are the same band cause they both draw from Bruce Springsteen. Kinda silly, dontcha think?
WOW - that cover of Heaven is amazing.

Editors don't sound like Interpol? Next thing you're gonna tell me Band Of Horses sound nothing like My Morning Jacket?
