"The only reason Dan's songs don't sound just like Bruce Springsteen - which isn't a bad thing - is probably because of things I'm doing or changes I'm making...But the only reason my stuff doesn't come off like totally inaccessible, pretentious synth prog is that Dan helps normalize it, so it creates a good balance." (emphasis mine)
-Spencer Krug, in an interview with The Montreal Mirror last August
So what would would Wolf Parade sound like without Dan's Springsteenesque balance? I think Sunset Rubdown would be a good place to start. Unfortunately, their first album is not too far off from that bolded description above. It has some moments, but all in all it's very rough around the edges. One of the lowlights of the album is an early incarnation of the sweeping epic Wolf Parade gem "I'll Believe in Anything." Picture the song without any of the subtleties or hooks and that's what you're left with. Or what they started with, I suppose.

It gets better for the S-Rub, however. I got the new full length album and it's pretty excellent. Far more polished and less Lo-Fi. That isn't always a good thing, but in this case it is extremely welcome. That first album sounds like it was recorded in a studio built by the protagonist from Pi. It's scary. The aural equivalent of one of those early David Lynch shorts. This new one, however, sounds a lot more like Wolf Parade. Quieter and not as fleshed out, but still dramatic and very moving.
Here's the final track off the album. I like it a lot.
Sunset Rubdown - Shut Up I am Dreaming of Places Where Lovers Have Wings (mp3)

agreed -- great album. love that last track, especially when the beat kicks in around 5 minutes. dan writes the rockers for w.p. but spencer is obviously a really talented songwriter and his voice is arresting and emotional no matter what he's singing. his work with w.p., on this album and with frog eyes is all outstanding. i'm supposed to see sunset rubdown (hopefully with frog eyes) out here in s.f. a couple days after coachella, can't wait.
