Thank god you hate it. Now you can go back to more posts about Broken Social Scene, Feist and all of the rest of the rubbish that passes for "indie" these days. We are SO lucky.

Jeff

I guess. Did you see the BSS w/Feist video from Conan?

For the record...after a few listens, the music isn't bad, but those lyrics...come on.

david

yeah but at least Moz bothers to write lyrics that are heartfelt and he doesnt' cloak everything in irony or ambiguity like just about 99.9 % of the blogger approved indie nonsense.

douglas martin

if you thought the song was awful, why'd you post it?

"I knew you would hate this one."

Jeff

Why? I mean, it's still new Morrissey...

gurple

David is so right! The fawning that goes on over such mediocre bands like BSS, Sufjan, Hard-Fi (surely they must be joking..) is astonishing. I have heard the entire Morrissey album and it shits from a very great height over anything thay has come out of the "indie-band-would-like -to-be-rockstars-though" world that most of these blogs (especially the nyc based ones) so dunderheadedly champion. I can only chalk it up to an age thing perhaps...most twenty-somethings can't fathom a world wherein "indie" bands were still interesting and wouldn't jump at the chance to be on some dinosaurish major label.....

HAHA! Man, Morrissey fans can be emmbarrassing, eh? the smiths changed my life, and moz is my hero, blahblah and all that, but I can still admit when he seems to lose touch and makes lame records or embarrassing missteps lyrically and musically (most of Kill Uncle, Maldjusted). I thought, though it wasn't uniformly great, Quarry was pretty much a triumphant return to his classic strengths (regardless of whether it pushed any envelopes, which it doesn't need to) and loved even its flaws. But I gotta say I sure hope the rest of the record is better than this song, which blows pretty fucking hard. No real song structure, posturing riffs that remind me of grandpas in leather biker jackets and offer little else of interest, and lyrics that while I agree with the sentiments are pretty cringeworthy and lack the usual wit, irony complicated by sincerity, double entendre, storytelling strengths -- all the stuff that makes him one of the great living lyricists (when he's on). This is the sort of thing that makes it hard to defend him sometimes.

Steven Patrick Morrisey

You're all just jealous.

This song is incredibly mediocre. And so is the other one that leaked ... bodes poorly (as does a producer saying something like "I'm 2/3rds of the way through the best record I've ever worked on" which is code for "it ain't that great."
