Yesterday I did a Gothamist band of the week feature on Foreign Islands. I had read some good things about their live show, heard a couple mp3s, thought they were pretty good. Decided to stick around after The Slip last night and check em out. Very very impressed. Perhaps New York's answer to Forward Russia? Too soon? How about lots of Bloc Party with a little Blood Brothers Spazz or Circle Square Triangle-era Test Icicles (who, I might add, Pitchfork labeled as Post-Hardcore today...ahem. Not so far off after all.) It was tits of sloppy energy from one song to the next. Lots of audience participation too...picking up the mic stands, replugging in the guitars, fixing the amp mics. I think the main helper was a manager or something, but everybody up front pitched in a bit. At one time, if I wasn't mistaken, there were three non-bandmembers on stage addressing various technical issues at one point while the band kept on playing. They were really fun tho...hard and fast and loud. It's certainly nothing groundbreaking, but seeing a band like this reminds me that there may still be a few fruits left to pick off that dance-punk tree.
Foreign Islands - Fine Dining w/ The Future (mp3)
Foreign Islands - Ghost Story (mp3)

I left the show wondering how much they have to pay Les Savy Fav in royalties.

impressed? really? i thought the first two or three songs were pretty solid but after that it seemed like they took a bit of a nosedive. dunno. i went in with hopes of a good show after listening to a few of their tracks online but i think i enjoyed black wire more.

The singer used to sing for a great Hardcore band called Supertouch. This new band is total garbage. Figures all the little kiddies would be into it though...
