I imagine, like many people Sunday afternoon, I was trying to figure out how I could have been in the right place in the right time to see The Arcade Fire play an impromptu set of 80s covers in Union Square but a few blocks from my apartment early Sunday morning. I suppose if I had made it to the Fiery Furnaces show at Northsix, (Which I skipped because I thought they were going on later and by the time I noticed, I had already missed them) then hung out in Williamsburg for a while afterwards before coming home at a reasonable hour, I might have happened across them as I was getting out of the Subway. That's all assuming, of course, that the L was running last weekend.
Sigh. Can't win them all...but damn, it kills me to know that I was just getting home as they were jamming out but a stone's throw away. What can you do?
Here's the video of them covering 'Boys don't Cry' from Union Square:

As a minor consolation, there's a great week of shows coming up. Tonight I'll either go check out the stacked Thunderbirds are Now!/Blood on the Wall/Hold Steady show at Webster, or DFA 1979 at Exit in Greenpoint. There's just as good a chance tho I'll just take the night off, have some friends over and try out Guitar Hero, which is the followup to the only music games I've ever really been able to get into, Frequency and Amplitude. It comes out today.
Tuesday, The Joggers and Rahim are playing at the Knitting Factory. Wednesday night is Test-Icicles at the Cake Shop, and I can see for myself once and for all if they're actually any good. Thursday is Art Brut, whose album has grown on me substantially, but I'm completely sold yet. Friday is Okkervil River, who I've been waiting to see for what seems like ages. I got into their album literally 2 days after they were here opening for Earlimart at Bowery. As a bonus, Charles Bissell from the Wrens is opening. Saturday is a wildcard. I may either go see Okkervil River or Art Brut again if I feel either is worth a second dip. May also try to find a way into the second Bauhaus show at Nokia Theatre. And that's the week.
We live in exciting times, don't we?
I think I've been visiting Central Village too much. I'm going to the same 5 shows this week.
