So are these guys actually any good? I honestly have no idea. At first listen, I'd say pretty catchy, but mostly forgettable. But then I put this song on before heading out last weekend with my roommate's girlfriend in the room. Now, I've played hundreds of thousands of songs on front of her over the summer while she's been around, and I've never gotten any reaction out of her towards my music. Nothing. Ever. And I mean, I listen to a lot of good, catchy stuff too! But she's never shown any interest at all.
So Nightmare of You comes on and all of a sudden she's bobbing her head along and asking me what song it was. She liked it! I was shocked. Of all songs for her to finally speak up and acknowledge, this? Granted, she's 20 and still in college, so maybe it's somewhat of an age thing. I dunno. I mean, I'm not THAT much older than her. I just found this very interesting.
I've listened to it now a bunch of times trying to figure it out. It still seems relatively ordinary, yet oddly addictive. I should try and track down a few more of their songs. Somehow, I've seen them play live TWICE already(?!) and remember them being much better the second time (at Rothko). Neither time did I leave particularly convinced, however.
I must say that no matter what I end up thinking about these guys, the comparisons to The Killers and Brand New are downright blasphemous. They're not even remotely in the same league.
Have a listen tho and see for yourself. (via Ultragrrrl, obvs)

Hmmm, interesting take. I'll try playing this for my young-ish (24) girlfriend and see if I can get a similar response. That's if Ultragrrl ever sends me the CD I paid for!!!
Sheesh!

Forget it, I got it to work on RealPlayer. Good tune, thanks Jeff.

Yeah. .m4a is the extension that iTunes defaults to when you rip a CD. It plays in realplayer and iTunes, not sure what else.

you hit the nail on the head. forgettable. i remember reading the hype on ultra's blog for quite a while. she had me sold that they were really that great. maybe it's just the recording or something, but the song falls flat on its face. no real hook. no excitement. blah.

I've just played this song to my brother's girlfriend (22), she thinks it's the best song she's ever heard. This song has clearly been contructed in a secret pop laboratory by evil genius scientists.

listening to that song is like getting a gay lobotomy.

the album is drugs. good drugs, not the kind in the news. it is anything BUT forgettable. since my first time hearing the full length i havent had a single morning that i havent woken up without a NOY song in my head. seriously.

oh, i wanted to add... "my name is trouble" is the obvious first single off the LP, but isnt indicative of the bands vibe on a whole. sarah and i were hanging out with the guys, trying to get them into "munich" by editors. they werent really feeling it, and when i assured them that the editors album had a lot more to it, that it wasnt all as dancey and glossy as "munich," brandon responded, "oh, so this is like, their 'trouble'?"

Well, I'll surely give the whole album a listen. I honestly wasn't trying to bash them or anything, cause I do find this song strangely addictive, despite the lack of a standout hook. I was just trying to talk through my confusion up there.
Secret evil pop-labs indeed...

"the album is drugs. good drugs, not the kind in the news."
