Been around over the weekend. Thursday I was over at Pier 54 for the Von Bondies show, but was really there to catch the opener, World Leader Pretend. I really really like these guys, but I'm having a hard time describing what they sound like. The lead singer's voice reminds me a lot of Matt Bellamy on some songs, but the music is completely different. Regardless, they put on a great live show, and will hopefully be playing a proper set in the city sometime soon. You can download a track of theirs here if you're interested.
I didn't really have any interest in seeing the Von Bondies, but I stuck around for a few unimpressive new songs before heading east down 14th to grab the L and head aimlessly into Williamsburg for Charles Bissell at Pete's candy store. He was superb. I'm guessing from his demeanor that he doesn't go solo too often. Kept on saying he was unprepared and didn't know what he was doing, but then he would make up these dazzling guitar loops go right into the familiar songs. Was excellent. Nora was there too and posted some old Wrens MP3's, Including one of Central Village's all time favorites, Everyone Choose Sides.
Saturday I saw We Are Scientists at Mercury Lounge, who completely blew me away. The songs were great, they were happy and smiling and bouncing around the stage, and the frontman absolutely killed on guitar. Karen pretty much nailed my reaction. I did see a little Bloc Party in them, particularly in the guitar breakdowns and the stage presence. The MP3's below don't do them justice. As much as I liked "Nobody Move..." when I first heard it on the radio, seeing them live is necessary. I know I blow around enough superlative on this blog already, but I have no doubt these guys will be MTV big by the end of the year once their album comes out. I put a few blurry shots of the show up on flickr. Songs below.
We Are Scientists - Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt
We Are Scientists - Inaction
We Are Scientists - This Scene is Dead
This week I'm seeing the Scissor Sisters at Mercury Wednesday, then Dinosaur Jr. with Broken Social Scene Thursday, Insound's excellent pre-party at Rothko Friday with The Ponys and Chin Up Chin Up, then Siren Saturday, with a Dungen nightcap at Merc.

Glad you liked them. One of NYC's best kept secrets won't be secret much longer.

True. It was a kick ass show. The show a few months ago at CBGB was even better though. I think they were more wasted and the frontman keith (harvey mudd grad) was climbing on the drums, breaking strings and generally fucking shit up. rock.
