I always had mixed reactions to Entourage. Last season it was perfectly fun and mindless entertainment, but I always thought it was way too drenched in cheese. Everything went too good for those guys. All emotional side plots were covered over by a "c'est la vie" shrug and a fist pound. It got old. It felt like I was watching the same episode over and over again, and while that one idea was perfectly entertaining, it could have used a shake up. This season seems to be better tho.
Is it just me, or has this now actually become a real show? I feel like Entourage and the OC swapped writing staffs for their second seasons. I mean sure, the episodes are still dominated by a gaudy party and some b-list celebrity cameos, but the show's gotten a bit darker and less predictable. Vince not being able to get any respectable roles is a nice twist, and even if it works out for him in the end, at least they are going down the path where he gets a glimpse of reality. The Eric/Girlfriend arc over the first two episodes was actually well done and actually had an emotional resonance that the show was so vapidly missing through the first season. The only thing that seems to have slipped a bit is Piven's character, but I think part of the reason he came off so well last year was because he was that much better than the rest of the actors. Now that the show has balanced itself out more, he doesn't stand out as much. I'll take that.
Basically, I'm excited that the show has come down to earth a little bit. I've been a huge fan the first two weeks and hope they can keep it up throughout the year. I wanna see more heartbreak. more tension. More personal issues.
Sundays are depressing enough as it is. I don't want those punks' lives to seem THAT much better than my weekend was...
I've been hooked too. Never saw it last season, but I'm enjoying Season 2.
