Please keep in mind that these are BENEFIT concerts. They benefit the rest of the free Summerstage shows. You pay a little bit more so that the people who wanna see the other 95% of the lesser-known acts can go for free. Believe me when I say you DO NOT want bands like Modest Mouse playing a first come, first serve show in Central Park. Last Summer I got up early to see Nas do a Sunday afternoon show at Summerstage for free. I got there three hours early in the pouring rain and there were already two lines, each LITERALLY stretching a over half-mile long in each direction (10 blocks up and downtown). Needless to say, I did not even come remotely close to getting in.
Is waking up at 6:00 AM to get in line for a slim chance to see one of these shows really worth $40 to you? Not to mention taking a day off work (where you likely earn more than $40 a day.) I mean lets be realistic here. You're on the wrong planet if you think you can just walk up and watch one of these bands play a free show at your leisure.
Also keep in mind, that with the exception of Kelly and the older acts, we've had a chance to see each and every one of these bands play much smaller venues for cheap over the last year or two. And that was fun, but thankfully quality music has reached the fringes of the mainstream. I think we should be happy for that, and if you don't feel like dropping $$$ to see Death Cab AGAIN, then there will surely be some wide-eyed teenager coming in from New Jersey who will be thrilled that the ticket you passed on will now be available for him.
