Last night I went to Brooklyn! First stop was Supreme Trading for The National album release party. Seemed like a nice enough bar, but not a good place to see a show. The performance space was dreadful. Way too packed, horrible sound, and a stage so small half the band had to stand on the floor, which since the stage was elevated, made those members look like they were crawling around on their knees. I really like the band, and was impressed by the the crowd they were able to draw, but I think I need to go see them in a more respectable venue next time.
From there I darted over to Northsix to see Sonic Youth. Was really impressed. They sounded perfect and on point the whole night. I'm afraid I am by no means a huge Sonic Youth fan...Actually, that's not fair. I love their music and appreciate the gigantic sprawling influence they have had over music for the last 20+ years, but they've got such a large body of work, It's hard to call myself a big fan because I'm just not familiar enough with all their stuff. That being said, I really did enjoy them last night. The band looked and sounded great. (Thurston is 47 years old! He looks 17!) I was glad I went.
I didn't have a camera, (still on loan to the LES produce inspector) but the picture of Thurston above was (once again) lifted from One Louder, taken from their seemingly less enjoyable show in Astoria earlier this week.

thurston is 47?! i knew he was getting up there, but damn.
yeah i've read a couple accounts of northsix and it sounds like it topped the astoria show. sonic youth on an average night are still pretty impressive though ... i love seeing how they create their sounds.

I was suprised to find out too that he's that old, but when you think about it, he's been doing this for over 20 years. He couldn't really be all that much younger.
